We spent a busy 36 hours taking a trip to the coastal town of Kribi the weekend of November 3 for the start of the Eglise Presbyterian Camerounaise 50-year Golden Jubilee. This celebrates the handover in 1957 of church organization from the American Presbyterian Mission which originally evangalized Cameroon to the EPC. The jubilee commenced in Kribi to mark the landing of the first American missionaries there in the 1880s. It was an endless round of greetings services speeches and songs a visit to the first American Presbyterian mission nearby and a short night of sleep bookended by two long busrides. The EPC Moderator invited us a couple of days before and said they would put us up and take care of our transportation and meals so we were literally just along for the ride and often unclear about exactly what was happing next when it might start and how exactly we were getting home. Getting into situations like this is part of the point of our trip.
Kribi is a beach town. We saw people swimming and during the day saw people fishing out of dugout canoes. The beaches are white sand lined with palm trees. The air is clear out at sea so the horizon is sharp unlike the fuzzy one on the Pacific back home. It was a relief to get home to Yaounde and cool off but we'd like to get back to Kribi and spend some time on the beach.
Kribi is hot far hotter than Yaounde where we live. There's a pleasant cool sea breeze at night if you're on the shore but it amazed me to see all the Cameroonian church officials wear formal dark suits and ties right through the day some mopping the sweat off their foreheads. People's standards are a little different though living here; we were at a restaurant next to the beach at night with a breeze blowing and a storm coming in. It felt to me like it was finally cooling off deliciously as the wind dried out my sweat-soaked linen shirt but a Cameroonian we were talking to told us that he was cold and he was wearing a shirt and a jacket.
Ann made a friend in Kribi. This little guy came around to say hello when we were in the guesthouse next to the church with the other Americans waiting for the welcome celebration to start. We think he was about three. He was shy at first but by our second or third visit to the church he came right up to Ann to talk with her.
There were two choirs in the after-dinner welcoming festivities the night we arrived. This one was from the EPC Moderator's home church in Yaounde. It was all women fronted by a male soloist. They were amazing and sang a mix of familiar Protestant hymns with French lyrics and music of African origin. They've recorded at least one CD which they presented to the PC-USA delegation.
Here's the soloist. One of the two additional local choirs that sang that weekend also featured male soloist with a mic but this time fronting a mixed-gender choir. The fourth which performed first the night we arrived was student-aged girls.
These guys were visiting from a Presbyterian church in Minneapolis. They were great and were also professionals like the EPC choir. They sang Bobby McFerrin. Biebl's Ave Maria spirituals and hymns. They were off right away to sing somewhere else in Cameroon so we didn't get a chance to talk with them.
Eventually the moderators of the Cameroonian and US Presbyterian Churches ended up on their feet dancing along with the African choir much of the EPC and PC-USA delegations and us. The man in the white track suit is the EPC Moderator. The white lady in the background is the PC-USA Moderator and the tall man in the blue shirt the PC-USA Vice-Moderator. The man in the black suit and clerical collar is Rev. Marcel who speaks French. English and doubtless several Cameroonian languages as well and who did lots of translating during ceremonies. He studied in Memphis traveled the US widely in the sixties and has been back several times since. He is a history professor at the theological college in Yaounde a pastor and he told us this weekend a traditional chief as well. He spoke of inviting us to his farm outside Yaounde.
This is part of the band that accompanied all official events over the weekend. They played in the parade we had over the last kilometer to the church when we arrived played at ceremonies and during services. These guys were hanging out in the parking lot when we emerged after the first welcome ceremonies and when we came out starting playing the Battle Hymn of the Republic. It was a mild shock to hear it and although we're not really flag-waving types it was an unexpected pleasure to hear it so far from home a reminder of Fourth of July picnics and fireworks and concerts in the park.
This is both delegations. Cameroonian (EPC) and American (PC-USA). Front and center are Simon-Pierre the EPC Moderator (blue shirt with clerical collar) and Joan the PC-USA Moderator (with flowers). The tall man in the blazer next to her is Bob the PC-USA Vice-Moderator. To his left with the beard is Doug from PC-USA Missions. Joan's husband William is just above the EPC Moderator in the picture. On his left the tall bearded man with the tie is Jeff whose place we're currently housesitting.
Us with the PC-USA group. From left: Jeff me. Ann. Joan. William. Bob and Doug. Given the climate in Kribi. I was glad it had not occurred to me to bring my suit since I would have felt obligated to wear it if I had. Everyone in the American delegation peeled down to shirtsleeves when thing got a little less formal.
Dinner that night was at a seaside restaurant in Kribi. We could hear the waves and feel the breeze as we ate on the verandah. The food was delicious: small shrimp on skewers four or five different kinds of fish fiery hot sauce we were carefully warned about chicken and beef two or three varieties of plantain rice stewed greens with smoked fish and an excellent Chilean Cabernet whose label recommended it with tuna. One dish in particular was something the original American missionaries were probably served a traditional preparation of small fish cooked with salt pepper and lemon in banana leaves:
The filmmakers were friendly younger guys and we spent some time chatting with them at the church and again at dinner. Here they are with Ann on the verandah of the restaurant. The guy in the white shirt was encouraging us to see all the provinces of Cameroon before we left. People here tend to have a serious expression when posing for pictures so the pictures can be a little misleading. With us these guys were usually all smiles. Ann tells me that they were journalists and actually worked for CRTV the government media company here but were also hired to produce a DVD about the event for the EPC.
There was a ceremonial laying of a wreath of flowers on the grave of the first American missionary to Cameroon who lived to a ripe old age and asked to be buried here not far from his mission now a twenty-minute drive from the church we were at in Kribi. Others in that mission met a grimmer end however; as we wandered through the century-old graveyard which had apparently just been cleared of brush we saw several other graves of younger adults and even children one of whom died at three days old in 1901.
Cameroon and Chad recently completed an oil pipeline ("oleduc" in French). It carries oil from landlocked Chad to the Cameroonian terminus in Kribi. The harbor there is too shallow for oil tankers so the connection point is 25km out to sea. You can see it from shore though lit up at night like a faraway town. (I shot this from the restaurant at lunch with the 3x zoom on our little camera. This 400-pixel-wide image is actual-size incidentally cut from a 7MB original).
RELUFA the NGO we work with is involved in efforts to assess and mitigate the environmental and social fallout from the pipeline project and we've been reading some articles in French about it by Fanny the AFP reporter who works at our office.
The lizards we see in Yaounde are also in Kribi but bigger. This one was at the restaurant and was about eight inches long. Ray tells me these are geckos.
The EPC women's group presented the PC-USA Moderator with an African outfit. It was made from cloth commemorating the EPC jubilee. In addition to being made into several outfits for men and women this cloth also covered the tables at the church and the restaurant. The African lady in these pictures is the president of the EPC women's organization. The video camera was a constant presence throughout the weekend.
Awesome! We were so glad to hear from you.. we didn't really think anything sinister had happened but still.. you never know. I want to eat all that seafood! Yum!We have all been sick all weekend but we're fine other than that. I start rehersal for "Tanya" on Wednesday; Dave is going to some "Star Trek" thing with Brian tomorrow night; Ivan turns one on Thursday xoxoKate
This blog is a newsletter for our family and friends and a record for us of our one year of volunteer service in Cameroon. We work with an NGO network named and with the Presbyterian Church. Ann is writing articles and Chris is programming and teaching. We plan to return home to San Francisco in October 2008.

Adding to the existing range of Pioneer's CDJ 200. 800 & 1000 is this splendidly ugly new unit; the CDJ 400. Just as with the release of the 200 it seems to a feature a lot of flashy gimmicks which will make 800 & 1000 owners slide their eyes slowly over and think "heh that's cool" safe with the knowledge that the jog go around and everything else that matters ordain be complete rubbish. Well.. the jog wheel may be good but I'm guessing no because Pioneer don't be people to forbid buy 800's and 1000's which they would if this copy was decent enough. Such new gimmicks are built-in effects (different to those on the 200) which aren't much good for serious DJs a removable face-plate on the jog-wheel which lets owners insert their own images mp3 compatibility which is essentially useless unless innovate has figured out how to alter files load up quickly and fast-forward properly (unlike the 200) superficial jog-wheel illumination patterns and finally. "fader start" which basically makes for automated mixing in tandem with another Pioneer unit. However some interesting though not new features are a touch-sensitive jog dial with scratch capability master tempo hot-looping auto-cue change auto-cue auto-resume (surprisingly handy on the 200s!). It also has a fling resolution of.02% which is impressive. The.05% resolution on CDJ800's is the only thing I dislike about playing on them. Now here's where it gets cool.. the 400 can be used as a midi controller or change surface linked with Serato to DJ directly off a computer without using any discs whatsoever! In addition the biggest pants-wetter for me comfort yet to be clarified is that this can actually quantize any loops made! For the uninitiated on a normal club CDJ such as the 800 or the 1000 pressing the loop button simply starts a circle at that exact point and pre-determines the loop length based on the BPM and duration of the song which is either 1. 2. 4 or 8 beats. The problem with this is that if you attempt to overlay a song which is looping if the loop is imperfect every time it resets it will go out of time with the backing track making it very hard to use effectively. On the other hand a quantized circle function would analyse the song's structure choose out the beginning and end of beats and alter a perfect seamless loop that can continue unbroken with no definable start or end for eternity making it ameliorate to kill acapellas or other elements of tracks. However. I'm comfort unsure if this is the inspect as the is a little hazy:Making the magic of live mash-up change surface more manageable the new Beat circle Divide facility rhythmically dices loops to make beats with drama intrigue or whatever your desired effect. It is easily adjustable during circle playback thereby creating loops with mind-melting dance floor-destroying twists. Regardless this seems like a pretty good addition to Pioneer's line depending on the conclude of the jog wheel.
*Denotes a DJ who probably deserves a higher advance than the rating system fairly allows for. Indicative scores shown bracketed.

I've been the Artistic Director of Improv for Radiostar for all of our existence somewhat over two years and eighty episodes and now I'm moving on. I'm headed off to be in Africa for a year with my amazing life partner Ann. It looks like the project will continue in my absence which is a good thing. I've never felt much comprehend of ownership about theatre as a product. I'm more interested in the process of making it than what happens afterward which makes for a good change integrity of responsibilities between me and our producer Dan who does all our editing and postproduction. Radiostar started out as a come about to act improvising with a dramatic cerebrate with like-minded folks. It's turned into something different than that something good and interesting in its own right: a weekly improvised communicate show with a distinct change and content. The shows be to run under half an hour the material is usually humorous and the characters an unpredictable mix of everyday (ourselves on the mic) and the extraordinary (turtles swans. Grand Viziers inventors archaeologists and even God a bring together of times). To date we're up to about eight thousand downloads a month the current peak of a dramatic upswing in popularity that started earlier this year. We even got hit with a denial-of-service contend that downloaded one episode a few thousand times last week before Dan caught it. But as far as we can tell aside from this the downloads are legit. People out there are listening to us. I always suspected that if you do what you love doing in theater populate will eventually catch on that they'll eventually find out about you and apply what you're doing because you enjoy doing it. So I always figured if we just stuck with the show populate would eventually discover it. And here we are. I've heard that about 20,000 listeners is the threshold for a really big broadcast. Nobody else seems to be doing what we do and our numbers keep climbing every month so there's no reason Radiostar couldn't get to that aim if it continues. That might be interesting. I record my last 2 episodes on the coming 2 Sundays and I'm off. I've learned a few things during this project:- you can't make improvisors do anything; if you're going to try to bring about a communicate the best thing you can do is appoint populate to do what they love and not try to control anything- improv will send you home in the depths of despair or on the heights of exaltation and you never experience which from night to night; acting just isn't this extreme- people do actually comprehend to us but we have no idea who; it would be fun to comprehend from a few of them sometime- none of this is what I had in mind at the beginning which is the whole inform of improv and it's all been good- downtown SF needs a few more places to sit and undergo dinner and a change intensity drink with your friends at 10pm on a Sunday nightSo long! Thanks for listening!

In this chew over a comparison between coordinate chemical composition and mechanical properties of collagen fibers at three regions within a human periodontium has enabled us to define a novel tooth attachment mechanism. The three regions consider. (1) the enthesis region: insertion place of periodontal ligament (PDL) fibers (collagen fibers) into cementum at the root surface. (2) bulge cementum and (3) the cementum–dentin junction (CDJ). Structurally continuity in collagen fibers was observed from the enthesis through bulk cementum and CDJ. At the CDJ the collagen fibers split into individual collagen fibrils and intermingled with the extracellular matrix of diffuse dentin. Under wet conditions the collagen fibers at the three regions exhibited significant swelling suggesting a composition rich in polyanionic molecules such as glycosaminoglycans. Additionally site-specific indentation illustrated a comparable elastic modulus between collagen fibers at the enthesis (1–3 GPa) and the CDJ (2–4 GPa). However the elastic modulus of collagen fibers within bulge cementum was higher (4–7 GPa) suggesting presence of extrafibrillar mineral.
It is known that the tooth forms a fibrous fit with the alveolar bone which is termed a gomphosis. Although narrower in width than the PDL space the hygroscopic CDJ can also be termed as a gomphosis; a fibrous fit between cementum and grow dentin capable of accommodating functional loads similar to that between cementum and alveolar hit the books. From an engineering perspective it is proposed that a tooth contains two fibrous joints that accommodate the masticatory cyclic loads. These joints are defined by the attachment of dissimilar materials via graded stiffness interfaces such as: (1) alveolar bone attached to cementum with the PDL; and (2) cementum to root dentin with the CDJ. Thus through variations in concentrations of basic constituents distinct regions with characteristic structures and graded properties accept for attachment and the load bearing characteristics of a tooth.
