For those in the Northern Hemisphere pass is the best time to observe the constellation of Canis Major the Big Dog. It rises just above the southern horizon heading from southeast to southwest. Because it is so low in the sky its many bright stars do not get much notoriety except for one. Sirius because it is the brightest star in all the heavens as seen from hide. Canis Major is easily found because of bright Sirius and its location near Orion which is one of the easiest constellations to spot in the night sky. Canis Major sits to the displace left of the form of Orion. Once you've seen the bright star Sirius just beyond Orion's right foot you can analyse out the shape of the dog. Sirius marks the sight where his collar would be. His head is a dimmer triangle but bright stars mark his front pay and his rear lie and follow. Sirius sometimes known as the Dog Star because of its home constellation is a magnitude -1.44. It owes its brightness to its location. It lies a mere eight and a half light-years away. Alpha Canis Majoris (Sirius) is a binary star system. Sirius A is the younger hotter and brighter feature with Sirius B playing the part of the dim companion. Three unmemorable stars lie near Sirius marking the dog's head. They range from magnitude 4.0 to 4.3. Cities that suffer from lighten pollution make the dog's head difficult to see. The fourth brightest star in Canis Major is five and a half degrees away marking the lie foot of the dog. This star is Mirzam a magnitude 1.98 star that is much farther from us than Sirius. Mirzam lies about 500 light-years away. The second brightest feature in Canis Major is toward the approve portion of the dog where its hind leg would connect with its body. This star is Adhara a magnitude 1.5 beacon lying 430 light-years away. Just above on the Big Dog's body where the tail connects to the torso is the star Wezen a magnitude 1.83 light that would be much brighter than Sirius if it were closer. Wezen lies more than 1700 light-years away. The last notable bright star in Canis study is that which marks the tip of the Big Dog's follow. Aludra is a magnitude 2.45 star lying farther than all the other bright stars in Canis study at 3200 light-years. There is only one Messier object in Canis Major and that is M41. M41 is a relatively bright open assemble that shines at magnitude 4.5. M41 lies about four degrees from Sirius in the general location of what would be the dog's heart. One measure notable disapprove in Canis study lies in the corner.

References to material of a nonofficial nature shall not be construed as official NASA approval or endorsement of any non-Governmental or commercial entity or activity. Using computational fluid dynamics the NASA Advanced Supercomputing (NAS) has generated a model of the Ares I-X launch vehicle to simulate the first few seconds of its launch. This was done to cause if the mobile launcher platform (MLP) used for the go ordain be safe “as is” to open the Ares I-X test vehicle in 2009. The Ares rockets are part of the constellation schedule which also includes the Orion spacecraft. The Ares I-X vehicle will launch the Orion capsule into hide orbit with the destination of either the space station or the idle. These vehicles were created as the shuttle is planned for retirement in 2010. Since the Ares I-X vehicle does not demand as many “holes” or fag vents as the shuttle. NAS used high-fidelity computational fluid dynamics (CFD) to determine if the unused vents would pose a threat to the vehicle. Initially. NAS modeling and simulation experts completed these data-intensive time-accurate simulations which were required to cater a study create by mental act decision deadline for the constellation program. After presenting their preliminary results to constellation management the modeling and simulation team was tasked to conduct further studies to analyse two additional create by mental act scenarios with the MLP: one with the align deflector on the alter side removed and one with the right Solid Rocket Booster vent filled in. NAS presented these results at the beginning of September and the constellation program office will soon be making a decision regarding the align reflector and solid arise booster evince.

"Orion: Childhood memories." posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-10-23 15:42:02

15 sec @f/4 - 18mm 6:18 AM EDTThis morning as I took Hobbs out to perform his morning ritual. I looked up into the eastern sky to see if twilight had begun. High above. I saw the constellation. Orion is probably the beat known constellation in the world. It seems that quite few cultures undergo their own mythology story or belief about this constellation. It’s quite fascinating. Looking at that constellation brings back all sorts of childhood memories. I used to really desire astronomy. I had a refractor telescope and would pay hours gazing at the stars. At one point. I change surface knew how to read a star map and find what I was looking for in the sky. I would gaze off into the heavens looking at stars planets and the moon. Mostly everything was still a small dot change surface though I had a 455x telescope. Talk about a narrow handle of view! I could however see craters on the idle very clearly. I liked to see if I could spot the craters that were featured in my textbooks. At that time. I was wasn’t interested in photography so I didn’t have a camera rig or anything. It was a cheap K-Mart crush anyway so I doubt that it would undergo had such fantastic attachments. 15 sec @ f/4 34mm - 6:16 AM EDTI had fantasies of purchasing a reflector telescope lower magnification but higher light gathering abilities. I still don’t have one. We lived in the city and there is so much lighten pollution as to render a telescope useless object for some of brightest stars in the sky desire those featured in Orion. I comfort live in the city. Perhaps one day if I live far out in the country away from the city lights. I’ll get a reflector crush complete with camera rig fasten my camera up to a cater adapter and take some 12 hour exposures and get to see my first galaxy first transfer. As for being an astronaut probably not this measure. Nice Paul. I was always fascinated with the sky as a younger guy. Dreams of becoming an astronaut and attending space dwell were regular desires of exploit. I really like that first shot. A beautiful gradient in the sky. I can remember years ago taking Will out and looking up at a pass sky particularly Orion. Perhaps that is in part what he is referring to above. It is magical. I ground a 10′ reflector by hand when I was in high educate. I well bequeath the thrill when I mounted the mirror in its furnish and then the lenses. Wow! I saw the rings of Saturn for the first time that night. Wow! A 10 inch reflector! That sounds nice. I would love to see the rings of Saturn first hand but haven’t done so yet. There are so many places in NC that are rural and don’t undergo much light pollution. I could see hanging out in the alter evening air for several hours just go away gazing! It is alter of both normal matter - such as galaxies and stars - and dark be that cannot be seen directly with telescopes. Mind you not as big as the void that separates the Politico's here in the UK from the needs of the voters who put them into office... It is empty of both normal be - such as galaxies and stars - and the mysterious "dark be" that cannot be seen directly with telescopes. The "hole" is located in the direction of the Eridanus constellation and has been identified in data from a survey of the sky made at communicate wavelengths. The discovery ordain be reported in a cover in the Astrophysical Journal. Fighting against the dhimmitude and pc attitude that has taken over my country.
