New-born rocky planets have been detected in the Seven Sisters the most famous star cluster in the sky. Evidence for the latest batch of new planets comes from chew over of a star called HD 23514 in the cluster which is also known as the Pleiades. He believes it was pulverized by catastrophic collisions in a young evolving planetary system around the young star. They appear to be happening in a govern comparable to that between Mercury and Mars in our own solar system. The new observations by Dr Rhee and colleagues Inseok Song and Benjamin Zuckerman indicate that rocky terrestrial planets perhaps desire the Earth. Mars or Venus are forming or have recently formed. Their discovery will be announced in the Astrophysical Journal. Dr Rhee said: "This is the first clear evidence for planet formation in the Pleiades and the results we are presenting strongly suggest that terrestrial planets like those in our solar system are quite common."Despite their rocky nature no one imagines that there could be any life on the planets of HD 23514 as the newly formed planets are still so young. "Planet Formation in the Pleiades" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-27 19:37:39

I’ve always enjoyed Lynette Cook’s work. As you can see in the image below this space artist captures the drama of celestial events by drawing on recent findings. desire Chesley Bonestell. Cook can take you to an exotic displace and leave you staring but her focus is tighter homing in on exoplanets as filtered through ongoing bring home the bacon at observatories worldwide. The wonders she’ll have to work with as we find more and more such worlds can only be imagined. The dazzling collision below is her take on what may be happening as rocky planets form around HD 23514. The star’s designation doesn’t jump out but its location does the oft-studied Pleiades star assemble. Joseph Rhee (UCLA) and collaborators have been working infrared wavelengths using the Gemini North Telescope (Mauna Kea) and space-based infrared instruments measuring the hot clean around this 100-million year old star. HD 23514 is Sun-like enough to add to the intrigue of this exercise and it’s orbited by hundreds of thousands of times more dust than our Sun. bear witness for catastrophic collisions in an evolving planetary system? Perhaps. Whatever is happening seems to originate in a zone between 1/4 to 2 AU from the star the region between Mercury and Mars in our own Solar System. Benjamin Zuckerman (UCLA) thinks the sheer amount of hot clean is the result of a fairly recent collision between large rocky bodies perhaps reminiscent of the ‘Big Whack’ that produced the Moon four billion years ago. Says Zuckerman: “Indeed the collision that generated the Moon sent a comparable mass of debris into interplanetary orbits as is now observed in HD 23514.” Image: Artist’s rendering of what the environment around HD 23514 might be like as two Earth-sized bodies collide. Artwork by Lynette Cook for Gemini Observatory. This isn’t the first time Zuckerman has worked on terrestrial planet formation around Sun-like stars. It was back in 2005 that his team reported on BD+20 307 some 300 light years away in the direction of the constellation Aries. That one sports fully one million times the amount of dust that is orbiting our Sun a step up even from HD 23514. The conclusion: Most young Sun-like stars are probably building terrestrial-style planets through recurring violent collisions. Indeed comments Rhee. “This is the first clear evidence for planet formation in the Pleiades and the results we are presenting strongly suggest that terrestrial planets like those in our solar system are quite common.” Much younger stars in the 10 million year old range or younger are far more likely to undergo this much dust around them than stars as old as HD 23514 making it and BD+20 307 useful examples of how planet formation may occur around such ‘adolescent’ stars. The paper is Rhee et al.. “change clean in the terrestrial planet zone of a sun-like Pleiad: collisions between planetary embryos?” accepted for publication in Abstract: We study the interaction of a low-mass planet with a protoplanetary plough with a realistic treatment of the energy balance by doing radiation-hydrodynamical simulations. We look at accretion and migration rates and compare them to isothermal studies. We used a three-dimensional version of the hydrodynamical method RODEO together with radiative transport in the flux-limited diffusion approach. The accretion evaluate as well as the torque on the planet depend critically on the ability of the plough to cool efficiently. For densities appropriate to 5 AU in the solar nebula the accretion rate drops by more than an order of magnitude compared to isothermal models while at the same time the torque on the planet is positive indicating outward migration. It is necessary to lower the density by a factor of 2 to recover inward migration and more than 2 orders of magnitude to acquire the usual write I migration. The torque appears to be proportional to the radial entropy gradient in the unperturbed disk. These findings are critical for the survival of protoplanets and they should ultimately sight their way into population synthesis models.

"Dusty stars: images of our past?" posted by ~Ray

The TenBruggenBlog--THE source of news about science and the environment as they relate to the the Hawaiian Islands hosted by Jan TenBruggencate. Issues covered include science environment conservation sustainability canoe voyaging archaeology astronomy health and more. The communicate further serves as a review of scientific literature with applications to the Islands among them botany zoology marine sciences geology astronomy conservation management climate science. Something familiar but still strange is happening around star HD 23514 in the Makali'i the star cluster otherwise known as the Pleiades. Seven Sisters or Subaru. (Photo credit: Inseok Song/Digital Sky Survey inset: Gemini Observatory/Lynette Cook. The larger image was created by combining B. R and I bind images from individual back up generation Digital Sky Survey images into blue color and red visualise layers respectively. HD 23514 is shown by the yellow arrow.) What's strange according to astronomers who used Hawai'i's Gemini Observatory atop Mauna Kea along with the Spitzer Space Telescope is that they undergo identified what appears to be the formation of rocky planets like Earth around a star in Makali'i. It's interesting in part because life like ours could not survive on many planets even ones in our own solar system. Researchers writing in the Astrophysical Journal say the planet formation in the Pleiades “may come up be the first observational evidence that terrestrial planets desire those in our solar system are quite common," said UCLA astronomer Joseph Rhee. They studied a star called HD 23514 in the Makali'i. It's slightly brighter than our sun and is surrounded by lots of hot dust. The astronomers figure the dust is the result of massive collisions between planets or the embryos of planets. The clean forms the “building blocks of planets” and can clump together with other dust to form small objects the coat of asteroids and continue to clump up to eventually create objects the coat of planets said Inseok Song a former Gemini staffer who now works with NASA's Spitzer Science Center at the California Institute of Technology. “In the process of creating rocky terrestrial planets some objects collide and grow into planets while others shatter into dust; We are seeing that dust,” Song said in a Gemini/UCLA press channel. Also interesting about what the astronomers are seeing is that the clean is collected in the alter zone. The news channel on the investigate said: “The emission appears to originate from dust located in the terrestrial planet zone between about 1/4 to two astronomical units (AUs) from the parent star HD 23514 a region corresponding to the orbits of Mercury and Mars in our solar system.” The activity at HD 23514 which is much younger than our Sun may mimic what happened when our own solar system was younger. Astronomers believe our Moon was created by the collision between a young Earth and a planet the coat of Mars. Another collision between an asteroid and Earth is believed to have been the cause of the extinction of dinosaurs. The scientists earlier found another dusty star about 300 light years away in the constellation Aries which may also be indicative of planet-formation. Any hope of finding intelligent life on HD 23514? We may have a while to wait. Our sun is on the request of 4.5 billion years old but HD 23514 is only about 400 million. It's just in the affect of building its solar system. But the good news for those interested in the possibility of extraterrestrial life or at least planets capable of sustaining it is that planets like ours may not be that rare. “Our observations indicate that terrestrial planets similar to those in our solar system are probably quite common said Benjamin Zuckerman a professor of physics and astronomy at UCLA. So the dusty evidence of planet formation while it seems strange to us now many not be so strange at all. A little more about the Makali'i. When you act a close be the Seven Sisters may only appear to undergo six members visible to the naked or binocular-assisted eye. But if you act a really really close look the cluster has something like 1,400 stars. Makali'i is among the closest groups of stars to the Earth about 400 lighten years away meaning that if you had a space displace that could go the go of light which is really abstain you still would take four centuries to get there. Some folks might undergo been surprised at the start of this article to hit the books that the Makali'i are known in Japan as Subaru. Yep those stars on the front of the Japanese car represent the Makali'i that little clutch of stars in the northern sky that are distinctive because they are all gathered together desire coins in a round. They displace across the sky between Taurus the bull and Perseus the warrior. The Makali'i are not hard to find. If you go out at this time of year on a alter night in the early evening they're alter there. I acquire the name of this blog gratefully and with permission from my friend Nainoa Thompson. He uses the call “raising islands out of the sea” to act in the mind the experience of a voyaging boat coming up on a distant border and of watching distant peaks go out of the sea as the canoe approaches. The first measure I did it with him our vehicle was the voyaging canoe Hokule'a and the island was Nihoa. I recall the crew's excite at dawn seeing the twin peaks of the island be and then the saddle between them and finally the whole island. Thompson was the non-instrument navigator who had brought us there using only stars clouds wind seas birds and other cues. The name of this blog also invokes the idea of responsibility—raising as lifting up as caring for and conserving. The key to responsibility is understanding. If we are to care for these islands we need the kind of understanding of the environment that a traditional navigator needs.

I know nothing about astrology and I'm not a psychic. Or am I??? No. But I am full of brilliant observations and good advice both of which I keep to myself. Instead enjoy the following horoscopes which are lies. If Sept. 9 is your birthday: 9/9.. sounds like a German in denial. Capricorn (Dec. 22 -- Jan. 19): The sacred attach of matrimony is not to be taken lightly but it is to be given lightly especially if you intend to fool around. Aquarius (Jan. 20 -- Feb. 18): Just because your create has never told you he loves you that doesn't necessarily convey he doesn't though I think we'd all accept that's the horse to bet on. Pisces (Feb. 19 -- walk 20): Your most flagrant failures are merely successes that went terribly terribly awry. Aries (walk 21 -- April 19): Acne can be frustrating but at least it takes 10 years off your face. Taurus (April 20 -- May 20): The next time somebody with a knife tells you they're going to catch you say. "Gesundheit." Then run. Gemini (May -- June 21): You think you're an 8 so you really don't want to go out with anyone below a 6 unless they've got like a 9 or a 10 personality to fit it out. And by the same token you'd definitely go out with a 9 or a 10 but you'd get bored alter away if they had anything less than a 6 personality. But the fundamental miscalculation you've made in all this is that you're more like a 5 1/2. Cancer (June 22 -- July 22): For women respect and equality go transfer in hand which is why they're so obsessed with scented lotion. Leo (July 23 -- Aug. 22): Children are a blessing. Teenagers a be headache. Nature is beat of mystery. Virgo (Aug. 23 -- Sept. 22): Nothing satisfies a nihilist. Libra (Sept. 23 -- Oct. 23): If you evaluate it just might be possible that you could be plagued with the stunning effects of uncertainty you definitely are. Scorpio (Oct. 24 -- Nov. 21): accept me to introduce you to the Japanese version of that Mazda Zoom-Zoom commercial. Sagittarius (Nov. 22 -- Dec. 21): Allow me to inform you to and also the funniest. Aquarius (Jan. 20 -- Feb. 18): Instead of holding the events of life to unrealistically high standards consider lowering those standards. After all it's common knowledge that the only way to be satisfied with life is to ignore how disappointing it is then be pleasantly surprised when something mediocre happens. Pisces (Feb. 19 -- March 20): go is around the corner but not if you look where you're going. Aries (walk 21 -- April 19): A fairy godmother once said. "Salagadoola mechicka boola bibbidi-bobbidi-boo. Put 'em together and what have you got? Bibbidi-bobbidi-boo." So.. put six silly words together and you get the measure three words? That doesn't make any sense. I guess fairy godmothers get by on their spells not their dominate of logic. Taurus (April 20 -- May 20): Dr Pepper was established in 1885 the same year Grover Cleveland became president. This was also the year the rabies vaccine was first tested. Coincidence? Pretty much. Gemini (May -- June 21): People would trust you as much a they trust me if you would stop criticizing them accusing them of things you can't prove and pointing out ways in which they aren't as good as you. Cancer (June 22 -- July 22): A ghost is like an interesting opera. You've probably never seen one and even if you have nobody ordain believe you anyway. Leo (July 23 -- Aug. 22): go your heart. If that ends up inconclusive try it with a Venn diagram with the pros in one go cons in another and things that are both pros and cons in the lay space and the things that are neither pros nor cons outside the diagram.
