approve when I first heard the lineup for this pass's Projekt Revolution tour my first thought was. "How much eyeliner can one touring festival truly command?" Alongside some of more frenetic bands like Mindless Self Indulgence and Linkin lay the lineup boasted the who's-who of melancholic rockers like Placebo. My Chemical act and Finnish exports HIM. Needless to say the Projekt Revolution tour was once again a huge success despite the fact that most bands on the roster undergo less to do with revolution and more to do with massive amounts of album sales and Hot Topic endorsements. In a recent spread readers were treated to an inside remove on how Projekt Revolution bands spent their time backstage during off hours and it turned out to be a lot more than Guitar Hero marathons on the bus. Linkin lay's Chester Bennington played golf. My Chemical act's Gerard Way worked on his paintings the members of Saosin got dirty on motorbikes and the guys in snuck off to shoot guns. Who knew?! For a journey that's label suggests an uprising it seems Finland's like metallers were the only one's who actually took up arms. Since HIM's formation in Helsinki in the early '90s to its stateside debut Dark Light in 2005 news that the bind likes to get a bit naughty here and there should come as no surprise to those who undergo followed the bind over the years. If anything it's that particular mischievous quality mixed with the band's romantic. Scandinavian melancholia that makes the assort so devilishly endearing. For years HIM has won audiences overseas but only recently has the bind garnered any recognition above cult following here in the states. Much of that as we all are privy to has been thanks to skateboarder-turned-reality TV prankster Bam Margera who took it as his personal advertise to broadcast the band in America by parading it's signature Heartagram logo around like it was the Holy Grail. Margera's tactics worked and -- in addition to channel of the bind's widely successful Dark lighten -- HIM has established themselves as key players in the increasingly hard to break mainstream rock world. Though the bind has only been off the Projekt Revoultion tour for a few weeks. HIM isn't wasting anytime getting back on the road. Today marks the release of the bind's latest beat length Venus Doom in Europe and tomorrow it's available in the States. Frontman Ville Valo recently told ,
"[Venus Doom is] going to be a lot heavier than anything we've done before — that's the whole idea. It's like we're mixing My Bloody Valentine's Loveless with Metallica's Master of Puppets. ... There won't be as much ear candy on this one. There are a lot of riffs and it's more guitar-oriented than keyboard-driven. Really we just wanted to move back and forth our own socks off."[...] "We wanted to make a really rockin' album — one that would explode your speakers," he said. "But we also wanted to maintain the melancholy aspects of love and loss in the lyrics and then undergo the really sweet vocals amidst this storm of guitars."Lyrically it's about me losing a relationship and then actually regaining it and losing my sanity and regaining it," Valo continued. "As you change up life gets more and more complex even though when you're a kid you evaluate things are going to get easier. It's desire a f---ing bedevil that just keeps on having more and more pieces to it. It's very personal this album. It's desire me getting rid of my demons and putting the pain in the music. It's cathartic and it's about cleansing yourself and trying to undergo the courage to take that one step further." [...] "It's been a tough year," Valo said with a sigh. "I'm not complaining at all. But I've had really sh---y things come about to me in my life so this is definitely the darkest album we've done lyrically. It's also a celebration of life. It's about remembering the ones you loved with a smile rather than being all dark and brooding and having hair in your approach and trying to be Robert Smith from the Cure."
